The collection consists of research files accumulated by Harvey Klehr relating to American communism and Soviet espionage in the United States. The files include printed materials, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) files, materials relating to the 1979 Greensboro (N.C.) Massacre, and collected research files. Printed material includes radical periodicals, books and pamphlets accumulated by Klehr during his research. The FBI files, released under the terms of FOIA, concern organizations, topics, and individuals associated with American Communism. The Greensboro, North Carolina files relate to Walters vs. Butkovich, United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina, 1984. The collected material oral history interviews with Oliver Carlson and Charles Taylor; photocopies of early files of the Communist Party of the United States of America including letters, minutes, and reports from 1921-1922; "most secret communications between Communists Party operatives from 1934-1937, and Russian archives materials.

The FBI established this classification when it assumed responsibility for ascertaining the protection capabilities and weaknesses of defense plants. Harvey E. Klehr (1933- ) is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Politics and History at Emory University. He was born on December 25, 1945 in Newark, New Jersey. He received his undergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1967, and obtained a Ph. D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971.
